Washington-AP -- An internal inquiry last year found a potential Republican candidate for the Senate seat from Illinois engaged in "lewd and abusive behavior" while she served as a top official in the White House drug policy office.
A March 19th, 2003, memo prepared by drug policy office staff says Andrea Grubb Barthwell made repeated comments about the sexual orientation of a staff member to staff and used a kaleidoscope to make sexually offensive gestures.

I guess being a politician means having to lose your sense of humor ("hey! thats enough joking and merriment! Staff parties are a no-joke zone, people"). Lord knows you, I, and everyone else tease our friends with worse. Some people just cant recognize a joke (or a well-timed political memo spin move) when they see one. I hate political PR bullshit, no matter who is doing it. Notice how all the important issues (war, anyone? how about gay marriage?) get pushed aside for this juvenile jerk fest.

Anyway, of course, I agree with your main point. The only reason it came up in this case is because it's self-righteous, sanctimonious, pseudo-religious characters who seem to get caught up in this stuff. I mean, she's being brought in to pinch-hit for the public flogger, you know? Until yesterday, her main competition for the job were a pitchman for erection drugs who was fined $25,000 for grabbing his crotch at a game, and a bow-toting rockstar whose greatest cultural contribution contains the confession, "Well the first time that I caught it I was just ten years old, I caught it from the pussy next door..."
Plus, if she's going to be the kind of politician who will vote to put discrimintation into the Constitution, but then wants to say she's "jes' kiddin'!" when she makes demeaning remarks at the office, well, then it's not all so funny, is it?
She was a "top official" in the Bush White House Drug Office. This is an administration where John Ashcroft has been known to ask men he's interviewing if they are "attracted to women in the normal way" before hiring them. Don't you think word would get around about a gay staffer if his boss, a "top official", made "repeated comments about the sexual orientation of a staff member to staff and used a kaleidoscope to make sexually offensive gestures"? That's not like you or me making jokes about a gay friend's love life at our house. Come to think of it, I can't really imagine joking with a gay friend about how he'd like to handle something because it's long and hard, anyway. That just seems juvenile.
That's what I was getting at - that a lot of folks who work for the side that wants to keep people from getting married seem to have their own unresolved kinks.
Hyde, Livingston, Gingrich, Burton, Thurmond and on and on...it's not that they're kinky. I'm kinky myself.
It's that they're kinky, but they think they can tell other people not to be. That's their crime.
