Hey, I was living in Pennsylvania during most of his term as governor, so I find the words "President Tom Ridge" entirely alarming enough, thank you.

That said, I'm afraid I have to agree with the larger thesis that SOME sort of modification/extension of the rules of succession is probably not an inherently evil idea. The easiest, fastest way to accomplish what these folks are trying to do would be an executive order that the President and Vice President are NEVER to be within, oh, let's say 50 miles, of each other. Not at Camp David, not at their party's nominating convention, not on a duck-hunting trip, no exceptions at all. The only serious complication would be setting up dual inaugurals, and that would stimulate the economy of the other city chosen for the VP swearing-in.

This subject was actually kicked around quite a lot in late 40's, early 50's science fiction, when the reality of nuclear strikes soaked in. Glad to see the mundane world is just now thinking about this. :)
